Context: Many persons in Thailand loose a limb due to motor vehicular accidents, landmine explosions, and cancer. Because the majority of amputations in Thailand are caused by trauma, these persons lead active lives. Many international organizations provide appropriate solutions, including WHO, VVAF, and the Nippon Foundation. Internationally recognized work is also being conducted here in Thailand by The Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. The Princess Mother. Due to the complexity of the challenge, there is still substantial room for improvement in the theory, education, and design of these prostheses, both for body-powered prostheses and especially for rugged, inexpensive robotic prostheses.
